Uni? Tick. Accommodation? Tick. Luggage? Tick. Start your uni chapter off right and bring everything you need first time round!
Moving to university can be a stressful time, especially when moving overseas – and that’s before you’ve even started to purchase and pack everything you need! That’s why we’ve out together a checklist with hints and tips for our international students that will keep stress levels low and improve your transition into student accommodation.
So, what do you need?
- Start right, be organised!
First things first, organisation and planning is key! Don’t forget to complete your e-induction on your online portal and download/print your arrival pass ahead of arrival.
- Post to property, ready for your arrival
Forgot something and need to post? Speak to our property team before posting and let them know of any post they should be expecting along with delivery dates and whose name it falls under. That way we can make sure all your personal items and orders sent to site are safe and ready for you to pick up when you arrive.
- Travel light
Got a lot of luggage? As tempting as it may be, if you’re travelling overseas it is best to travel light and only pack the essentials including passport, VISA documents, university offer letter and enrolment details (please check with your university). Other items include your laptop and camera so you can capture the memories in your new home with Student Roost. Remember to check your maximum weight for luggage for your airline! Our site teams can always direct you to plenty of supermarkets and shops nearby which you can visit when you arrive to pick up any extra goodies.
- Pack for all seasons!
Don’t forget to pack for all seasons. Unlike some other countries, UK weather is hit and miss so making sure you pack those extra layers and coats for colder months (or even days in the summer!) is essential.
- Suffer from travel sickness? Be prepared!
Make sure to bring basic medicines in case of travel sickness or illness, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, before reaching the UK. That way, if you feel ill, you have something to hand ready to use.
Can’t get everything ready in time, or simply want to make your life easier? Make sure to pre-order any essentials such as bedding or kitchen appliances on Uni Kit Out. Or, why not ask our team to direct you to nearby shops where you can pick them up for yourself once you’ve arrived? Remember, if you are bringing anything electronic, ask the property team if the items are safe to use and if they are accepted at site. If you are an international student, please bring UK adaptors before arrival.
- Be smart, save money!
Not set up a UK bank account yet? Don’t worry, make sure to contact a UK branch when you arrive to get you set up – you can ask at reception if needed. In the meantime, bring enough cash to last while you get set up.
- Get connected
Need a new sim for your phone? When you arrive, property will have a free temporary pay-as-you-go sim for you to use until you get one set up. Platforms such as USwitch and Save the Student will give you a clear comparison of the best student deals to choose.
